Peter Scott, a 19 year old welding apprentice from Cove Bay, Aberdeen, is aiming for a national award after he won the local round in a BOC-sponsored competition to find Scotland’s best welding apprentice of 2010.
Peter works with OIL Engineering, specialist fabricators of large and technically complex constructions. He beat the other contestants in the competition held at ITCA, the Aberdeen-based training provider and will now proceed to the regional finals of the Scottish Welder competition. If he wins that, he will go on to compete for the Scottish Welder title at Motherwell in June this year.
“We would like to congratulate Peter on his achievement,” said ITCA Managing Director June Jones. “This is the first year we’ve taken part in the Scottish Welder competition, so Peter is our first winner. We hope he will progress all the way to the final and wish him every success in the future.”
In addition to a glass trophy, Peter’s prizes included a welding hood, donated by Steveweld and BOC vouchers.
Runners-up Greg Wood from S&D Fabricators and Daniel Massie from CPS, will be joining him in the regional heats.
Scottish Welder is sponsored by industrial gases provider BOC, a member of The Linde Group, and by the Scottish Government. BOC’s Business Director, Mike Dennis, said: “High level welding skills will be an essential element in delivering the infrastructure improvements planned for the coming decade. We are keen to support moves to enhance the UK’s engineering capabilities so we are delighted to continue our sponsorship of this national skills competition.”
