BOC and Taylor Construction Plant Ltd (TCP) will ‘pitch’ the Ecolite-TH2, the world’s first commercial low energy LED hydrogen fuel cell powered lighting tower, to a panel of UK seasoned industry professionals at LuxLive (www.luxlive.co.uk) on Wednesday 18th November as part of a Dragons’ Den session at ExCel London.
Stewart Dow, Fuel Cell Product Manager from BOC, the UK & Ireland’s largest supplier of industrial gases and related equipment, and TCP’s Managing Director Andrew Barker will be presenting the benefits of Ecolite-TH2 to the five ‘Dragons’: Society of Light and Lighting President, Liz Peck, together with lighting consultants, Richard Taylor, Simon Barnett, Dan Lister and Tad Trylski.
The Ecolite lighting tower is the result of a partnership between BOC and TCP. Powered by BOC’s HYMERA® fuel cell technology, the Ecolite-TH2 tower incorporates Linde’s innovative GENIE® lightweight hydrogen cylinder.
With no internal combustion engine or harmful emissions, the tower provides - at point of delivery - carbon-free, emission-free and noise-free lighting.
The Ecolite-TH2 is a full scale lighting tower and is a direct replacement for standard diesel powered units but it is particularly suited to locations where noise and emissions from traditional, diesel- or lighting towers would be an issue, such as urban or environmentally sensitive areas where there must be zero risk of contamination.
With a total of 20,000 lighting towers, the UK is the world’s largest consumer of mobile lighting towers per capita.
Currently, all of these run on diesel which means that they also produce CO2 and other emissions related to the use of hydrocarbon fuels, particularly diesel. The short daylight hours of the UK autumn and winter mean that towards the end of the normal working day, around 10,000 lighting towers will be operating to provide a safe working environment. During just one hour the towers will produce a total of 40,000 kg of CO2.
Designed and built in the UK, the Ecolite-TH2 is the perfect green alternative. BOC’s HYMERA fuel cell produces energy by combining hydrogen with oxygen (from the atmosphere) to produce electricity and water.
There are no carbon or particulate emissions as would be the case with a conventional diesel powered generator. In addition, the process is virtually silent which is important for work at night or in built-up areas and enclosed spaces.
The Ecolite-TH2 tower is designed to take two GENIE hydrogen cylinders, offering ease of handling and long runtimes, and operates as a battery hybrid. It is compliant with the requirements under Section 61 relating to pollution, including light and noise pollution, ground contamination.
