Chemicals

Chemicals manufacturing is at the heart of the UK manufacturing industry.

The main sub-sectors within the chemical industry are pharmaceuticals, base chemicals, plastics and synthetic rubber, paints and varnishes, agrochemicals, and soaps and detergents.

Natural gas and oil fractions such as naphtha are primarily used as dominant raw materials.  As is true of the rest of the industry, there is a keen awareness within the chemicals manufacturing sector of the need to replace fossil resources with sustainable alternatives, both as raw materials and for process energy.

Industrial gases are used in a wide variety of applications within the chemical industry.  They serve as feed materials for synthesis processes, ensure and improve the economy of processes and plants, enhance product quality and plant safety, and help to protect the environment.
