Offshore Wind Energy
In March 2007 European leaders signed up to a binding EU-wide target to source 20% of their energy needs from renewables by 2020. For the UK the target is 15% and Ireland is 16%. To achieve this goal the UK government aims for 40% of electricity to be generated from renewable sources. Offshore wind will play the major role with 10,000 wind turbines expected to be built in UK and Irish waters.
Offshore wind turbines are often situated in some of the roughest and most inhospitable seas, and have to be able to withstand enormous loads from huge waves and mighty swells. High quality steel and the most up to date production methods are necessary and, in this context, welding becomes particularly important as the huge steel towers and support stilts that the turbines are composed of are manufactured from several individual steel segments.
Performance standards for wind turbine components, particularly those operating offshore, confront manufacturers with tough challenges. BOC offers a number of products and applications that are up to these challenges; helping customers to cost-effectively achieve greater productivity and increased component quality/performance.
Manufacturers in the offshore wind sector need consistent and reliable supply of high quality products. BOC offers a full range of products including fuel gases and welding process gases, LASERLINE products and services, welding equipment and consumables and PPE.
