Fruits and Vegetables

The increase in year-round consumer demand for fruit and vegetables at high quality freshness presents both challenges and opportunities for producers and processors alike.

Care should be taken to handle products hygienically and gently during harvesting, storage, preparation, packaging and distribution to ensure they are maintained in the correct environment through the supply chain.

High-value products may benefit from preservation through cryogenic freezing or Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) to extend their availability and shelf life throughout the year, while maintaining original quality.

High-value produce such as raspberries and strawberries benefit greatly from cryogenic freezing and cooling. Rapid freezing means the fruit retains its texture, shape and flavour after defrosting. High-volume, low-value fruit and vegetables do not generally benefit from cryogenic freezing and cooling.
