Frequently asked questions
How is liquid nitrogen stored?
Liquid nitrogen can be stored in specialist vacuum-insulated, open dewars. You can buy or rent these dewars from BOC, or use your own.
25 litre aluminium dewars are the most popular choice with practices, but we can advise you on the right choice for you.
Does the liquid nitrogen evaporate?
If it is left without being used, a full 25 litre dewar will last approximately 100 days before all of the N2 has evaporated.
Most practices find a 25 litre dewar in use for cryosurgery lasts 4-6 weeks.
How long yours will last depends on a number of factors such as how often you use it and where you store it
How do I dispense of the liquid nitrogen?
Liquid nitrogen can be dispensed into a cryosurgery applicator by tipping or by using a withdrawal device.
The withdrawal device is the safest and easiest way. These can be bought or rented from BOC.
Is it safe?
Anyone handling liquid nitrogen should wear eye protection and cryogenic gloves as a minimum.
If the liquid nitrogen is stored or used in an enclosed space, an oxygen deficiency monitor should be used.
Where can I get the safety equipment?
All the necessary safety equipment is available from BOC.
We have selected CE-marked applicators from a manufacturer that complies with the Medical Devices Directive.
