The decision to transfer operating systems from coal fuelled to a biomass power station, even as a proportion of their output, is accompanied by the challenges of storing biomass in large quantities.
When storing biomass wood pellets in silos, bacterial and fungal activity generate heat within the material, alongside toxic and combustible gases. Pyrolysis can occur when oxygen levels are as low as 3%, so the risk of the material combusting within the storage facility either through auto-ignition or the introduction of an external heat source is high. Once ignited, there are considerable difficulties in extinguishing a biomass fire as the use of water causes additional difficulties, and the results are devastating and costly.
To manage and overcome these challenges, BOC provides fire suppression solutions that are tailored to inert a silo and extinguish a fire in the event of combustion.
