Cryogenic gases safety awareness workshop

This half-day instructor-led workshop provides safety awareness for all personnel who use, handle or store cryogenic liquids. Delegates will be made aware of the hazards of cryogenic gases so they can identify the risks and adopt safe working practices. Recommended maximum of 20 delegates.

Benefits

  • Training delivered by highly skilled, industry trained, experienced course directors
  • Efficiently ensure that staff gain awareness of cryogenic gas safety
  • Cost-effective on-site training
  • Staff are made aware of the hazards so that they can identify risks and adopt safe working practices

Who should attend

  • Anyone using, handling or storing cryogenic liquids
  • Laboratory and other managers with operational responsibilities for safety
  • Managers, supervisors and staff from all functions who are responsible for the safe use of cryogenic liquids within their department
  • Risk managers and anyone responsible for health and safety

Workshop overview

  • Why do accidents occur?
  • What’s in the air?
  • Expansion rates and oxygen deficiency
  • The need for oxygen monitoring systems
  • Team exercise - inert gas rescue
  • Hazards posed by cold - cryogenic burns
  • The need for personal protective equipment
  • Design of cryogenic vessels
  • Hazards posed by pressure
  • Safe handling of cryogenic vessels
  • Safe storage of cryogenic vessels
  • Potential oxygen enrichment hazards during decanting

What you will learn

The workshop will enable participants to:

  • Correctly identify cryogenic vessels
  • Recognise how cryogenic vessels operate
  • Be aware of the hazards of asphyxia
  • Appreciate the hazards posed by cryogenic liquids
  • Reduce risks when using cryogenic liquids
  • Be aware of the need to move vessels with care
  • Recognise the need for ventilation and monitors
  • Wear appropriate PPE when using cryogenic liquids

Liquid nitrogen decanting practical

This two hour instructor-led practical provides instruction on the correct procedures for the decanting of liquid nitrogen from a pressure vessel or working flask. Maximum of 12 delegates.

Benefits

  • Training delivered by highly skilled, industry trained, experienced course directors
  • Staff are made aware of the hazards so they can identify risks and adopt safe working practices
  • Product knowledge also promotes efficient gas use avoiding unnecessary wastage

Who should attend

  • Anyone decanting liquid nitrogen
  • Laboratory and other managers with operational responsibilities for safety
  • Managers, supervisors and staff from all functions who are responsible for the safe use of liquid nitrogen within their departments
  • Risk managers and anyone responsible for health and safety

Practical overview

  • Review the properties of liquid nitrogen
  • Team exercise - pipework identification, design and operation of cryogenic vessels
  • Filling and location of a vessel
  • Practical session conducted utilising a low-pressure vessel and either a working flask or dewar provided by the customer
  • The need for personal protective equipment
  • The need for oxygen monitoring systems
  • Valve identification
  • Pre-fill checks
  • The need to decant at the correct vessel pressure
  • Delegate practical session

What you will learn

The practical will enable participants to:

  • Correctly identify cryogenic vessels
  • Recognise how cryogenic vessels operate
  • Identify key safety features on cryogenic vessels
  • Be aware of the hazards posed by cryogenic liquids
  • Undertake pre-use safety checks on vessels and dewars
  • Safely vent excessive vessel pressure prior to decanting
  • Control hazards when decanting cryogenic liquids
  • Be aware of the need for safe decanting procedures
  • Recognise the need for ventilation and monitors
  • Introduce safe working practices in their workplace

Please note

  • All delegates must be supplied with, and wear, appropriate PPE during the practical session i.e. eye protection, safety shoes and cryogenic gloves.
  • All delegates must have completed the appropriate online or instructor-led safety awareness workshop before they can participate in the practical. In the case of instructor-led safety awareness workshops, the practical is usually held in the afternoon of the same day.
